The Lahuen Ñadi National Monument was created on January 10, 1997 by a Supreme Decree of the Chilean Department of Agriculture. Covering 200-hectares, it's located in the Lake Distric's central valley and just 8 miles from Puerto Montt in the Llanquihue province.
The Alerce forest is of great relevance as it depicts a vegetation that existed in the intermediate depression until the 19th Century, between Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas.
The Alerce tree (Fitzroya cupressoides), native of southern Chile was declared a national heritage in 1976, it has a 3,000 year life span. Nowadays, you can explore and admire the flora and fauna through a 900 meter path. You will see Alerces ranging from 5 to 1,800 years old and almost 40 meters (131 ft.) tall. They look magnificent surrounded by canelos (Drimys winteri) and coigues (Nothofagus dombeyi).
You can find around 37 different species of birds, among others the Chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula), Huet huet (Pteroptochos tarnii) and Black Carpenter (Campephilus magellanicus). In regards to mammals, you can find the Pudù (Pudu puda), Gray Fox (Pseudalopex griseus), Puma (Felis concolor Linneus) and Monito del Monte (Dromiciops gliroides).
In this exhuberant vegetation, you will find Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides), Meli (Amomyrtus meli), Tiaca (Caldcluvia paniculada), Canelo (Drimys winteri), Tepa (Laureliopsis philippiana) y Coigue (Nothofagus dombeyi) as the most prevalent as well as Quila (Chasquea sp.) and Coicopihue (Philesia magellanica). You can also see several species of ferns such as Hymenophyllum dicranotrichum, Hymenophyllum tortuosum e Hymenophyllum secundum. |
